The 5 Best Places for Fall Engagement Photos in Nashville

There is something so special about Nashville in the fall. Between the changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and vibrant autumn colors, it's one of my favorite times of year for engagement photos.

Luckily, Nashville has no shortage of beautiful places to take advantage of all that autumn has to offer.

Over the years, I've come to appreciate how much the setting can influence the overall feel of an engagement session.

Whether you're drawn to romantic gardens, historic architecture, or the natural beauty of a wooded park, the right location can help make your engagement session feel more like you.

You’re not simply looking for a pretty place to take photos. You’re choosing a setting where you feel comfortable, so you can take photographs that reflect this exciting season of your life.

If you're planning fall engagement photos in Nashville, here are five of my favorite locations.

1. Cheekwood Estate & Gardens

Best for: Romantic, garden-inspired engagement photos

If your Pinterest board is full of romantic, storybook garden inspiration, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens is the perfect place to start.

With its landscaped gardens, elegant grounds, and historic estate, Cheekwood offers a refined, yet soft backdrop for engagement photos. The gardens have a way of making even the simplest portraits feel romantic, and the estate itself adds an elegant touch without taking attention away from the two of you.

Fall brings a different atmosphere to the gardens as the season changes. The surrounding trees and landscaping add warmth and color to your photographs, while the estate's architectural details offer visual interest beyond the foliage.

One of the things I love about Cheekwood is how much variety you can find throughout the property. With the gardens, beautiful architecture, and thoughtfully landscaped grounds, you have plenty of opportunities to create a cohesive gallery without every photo looking the same.

A quick planning note:

Cheekwood requires advance booking and charges a fee for planned portrait sessions, including engagement photography. Some areas may also be unavailable due to events or maintenance, so it's worth checking availability when choosing your date.

You can find the current requirements and guidelines on Cheekwood's official website.

2. Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery

Best for: Classic Southern charm and historic surroundings

For couples who appreciate historic architecture and a timeless Southern aesthetic, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery is another lovely option.

There's something about the historic architecture and beautiful grounds at Belle Meade that feels so effortlessly romantic. Even without a backdrop full of colorful leaves, the property has plenty of character to give your photographs that classic, Southern feel.

When you choose an engagement location, consider the atmosphere you want your photographs to convey. If you love historic properties and traditional Southern settings (and gorgeous horses), Belle Meade may be a particularly good fit.

A quick planning note:

Belle Meade requires advance reservations and a paid photography pass for professional sessions. Photography inside the historic mansion is prohibited, so plan on using the approved outdoor spaces.

Check the official photography information before booking.

3. Percy Warner Park

Best for: Natural scenery and a relaxed fall atmosphere

If you'd rather trade manicured gardens for winding trails and beautiful woodland scenery, Percy Warner Park is one of my favorite places to consider. Between the tree-lined paths, natural surroundings, and those iconic stone steps, there's plenty of variety to work with.

Fall is an especially appealing time to consider a wooded location. As the leaves change, the surrounding landscape can add warm seasonal colors and depth to your photographs. The scenery also offers plenty of variety, from tree-lined paths to stunning architectural features like the park's stone steps.

Consider this location if you want your session to feel connected to the outdoors rather than centered on a formal building or manicured garden.

As with any outdoor session, the park's exact look will depend on the weather and when you visit. Because autumn colors vary year to year, flexibility helps when planning around the foliage.

A quick planning note:

Professional photographers need to arrange the appropriate Metro Parks photography permit.

You can find current requirements through Metro Nashville Parks.

4. Belmont University

Best for: Classic architecture and a collegiate setting

Not every fall engagement session needs to revolve around colorful leaves. If you're drawn to beautiful architecture and romantic outdoor settings, Belmont University offers a lovely alternative to Nashville's gardens and wooded parks.

One of the things that makes Belmont so charming is its architectural details. The beautiful archways offer a lovely setting for romantic portraits, while the fountain adds another elegant focal point. Paired with the surrounding greenery, these details create a setting that feels both classic and inviting.

I love the idea of incorporating a little variety into your gallery here, from more traditional portraits framed by the archways to relaxed moments together around the fountain.

If you appreciate classic architecture and a little collegiate charm, Belmont is definitely worth considering for your engagement session.

A quick planning note:

Before scheduling a professional session, confirm the university's current photography policies and any permission requirements. Start with Belmont University's photography guidelines.

5. Tennessee State Capitol

Best for: Historic architecture and a distinctly Nashville setting

If you love beautiful architecture and want something a little different from the traditional garden or park setting, the Tennessee State Capitol is a great option.

With its impressive stone exterior, grand columns, and historic character, the Capitol offers a beautiful backdrop for couples who appreciate a more architectural aesthetic.

There's something about the combination of its stately design and downtown Nashville surroundings that gives engagement portraits a distinctly elegant, almost editorial feel.

I love the idea of incorporating the Capitol's architectural details into your portraits while also leaving room for more natural, candid moments together. It's a wonderful way to create a gallery that feels polished without losing the personal touches that make your photographs uniquely yours.

And don't worry if a backdrop full of colorful leaves isn't what you're envisioning. Sometimes, a little architectural beauty is all you need!

A quick planning note:

Confirm current photography restrictions and access requirements before planning a professional session on the grounds. Because this is a government property, it's important not to assume every area is available for photography.

A Few Tips for Planning Your Nashville Fall Engagement Photos

Once you've found a location you love, there are just a few more things to think about before your session. A little planning ahead can make all the difference in helping you feel relaxed and enjoy your time together.

Be flexible with fall foliage.

One of the most appealing things about fall engagement photos is all the beautiful color the season brings. But if there's one thing to remember when planning your session, it's that autumn doesn't always follow a predictable schedule!

Depending on the weather, the leaves may change earlier or later than expected, so try not to get too attached to one particular weekend if you're hoping for those beautiful fall colors.

And remember, you don't need a backdrop full of colorful leaves to have a beautiful engagement session. The architecture, surrounding scenery, and natural light can all contribute to photographs you'll love just as much.

Choose a location that feels like you.

It's easy to fall in love with a location after seeing beautiful engagement photos taken there. But before deciding where to have your session, think about the kinds of places you naturally gravitate toward.

Do you love the romance of a beautiful garden? Would you rather spend an afternoon exploring a wooded park? Maybe historic architecture and classic Southern charm are more your style.

There's no right or wrong answer! I always encourage couples to choose a setting where they feel comfortable and can simply enjoy being together. Your engagement photos should reflect the two of you, and the right location is a wonderful place to start.

Think about your outfits and the surroundings.

Your outfits are another little detail worth thinking about when choosing your location.

You don't need to dress in a particular color palette just because you're taking fall engagement photos, but it can be helpful to choose colors and textures that complement your surroundings.

Rich neutrals, earthy tones, and classic textures can look especially beautiful against autumn scenery. That said, the most important thing is to wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. You want to look like yourself!

If you're having trouble deciding what to wear, don't be afraid to ask your photographer for a little guidance. I love helping couples think through outfit choices so everything comes together beautifully.

Plan ahead for permits and access.

A little planning ahead can save you some headaches on the day of your session!

Some of Nashville's most beautiful engagement locations require advance reservations, photography fees, or permits for professional sessions.

Before settling on a date, take a few minutes to check the photography guidelines for your chosen location. Some properties have specific requirements or restrictions on where professional portraits can be taken, so it's always best to know what to expect beforehand.

And if you're not sure where to start, your photographer can help you navigate those details. The goal is to arrive prepared so you can spend your session enjoying the experience rather than worrying about logistics.

Still wondering what it's like to work together? I'd love for you to hear from some of the wonderful couples I've had the pleasure of photographing.

Let's Plan Your Nashville Engagement Session
